NATLA

natla

Natla is interested in genetic experiments. She tells Lara that the human race has become decadent, like the Atlanteans before them. She wants to force a rapid evolutionary change in humanity by unleashing her creations upon the world in order to ensure that only the “strong” survive. She wants to see what sort of twisted perfection will result from such an experiment. She has no regard for the moral consequences and simply explains her plan as it is to Lara, discussing it on a purely intellectual level.

The rulers of Atlantis were presented with a more traditional science-fiction style (robotic appearances, cryogenics, genetics, evolution, etc.) In the original game, it is suggested that her wings are a mutant that she wears on her shoulders, and that her ability to shoot fireballs is due to a mutant attached or grafted to her forearm. There is no hint in Tomb Raider that she has the ability to shapeshift or teleport, or that she has super strength or is immortal.

PIERRE DUPONT

Pierre Dupont was born in Nantes, France, in 1951. In 1989[3], he works with Larson in an attempt to acquire the Philosopher’s Stone in Rome. He meets with Lara Croft during an opera performance to exchange the Mercury Stone for money. As Lara prepares to hand over a suitcase full of cash, Pierre holds Lara at gunpoint – planning on taking the money and keeping the stone. However, as Larson and Pierre prepare to leave, Lara kicks the stone out of Pierre’s hand and jumps off the balcony onto the stage, escaping the opera house. A chase ensues, and is ended when Pierre and Larson crash their car into a half closed gate. Larson and Pierre continue to stalk Lara throughout Rome as she collects three more stones to open a gateway that will lead her to the Philosopher’s Stone. Inside the Coliseum, Lara slips off a ledge with Pierre standing right above her. She agrees not to lay a finger on him if he helps her up, but catches him off guard with a “boo” causing Pierre to slip off the ledge.

In 1996, Pierre is hired by Jacqueline Natla to find the second part of the Scion artifact in Greece. However, he is followed into St Francis’ Folly by Lara, and attempts to kill her on a number of occasions. After Lara arrives at the Tomb of Tihocan, she encounters Pierre and the two engage in a gunfight for the piece of the Scion – the fight ending with Lara as the victor.

LARSON CONWAY

Larson Conway is a character in the original “Tomb Raider” game released in 1996. He is a member of the rival archaeological team hired by Jacqueline Natla, the game’s main antagonist, to find the pieces of the Atlantean Scion alongside Lara Croft.

Larson is depicted as a muscular man with a beard and blond head, wearing a green shirt and brown pants. He serves as a minor antagonist in the game, often seen trying to beat Lara to the Scion pieces and even attempting to kill her at one point.

Despite his antagonistic role, Larson has become a somewhat popular character among fans of the series, and has made appearances in subsequent games, including “Tomb Raider Anniversary” and “Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.” In some of these appearances, he is portrayed as more of a comic relief character, with a bumbling personality and a tendency to make sarcastic comments.

SKATER BOY

Along with the Bald Man and the Cowboy, the Skater Boy ambushed Lara Croft in Egypt shortly after she had obtained the final piece of the Scion. The mercenaries helped themselves to the artefact and Lara’s arsenal of weaponry. Following this, Lara escaped, diving off of the cliff-face and into the river far below.

Natla and the mercenaries headed for their yacht and set off for Atlantis. On board, the Bald Man was suspicious of large ripples that had appeared in the water but the Skater Boy was uninterested, dismissing it as a fish. It wasn’t until the yacht arrived at the island of Atlantis that the Bald Man’s suspicions were well founded. Lara was still alive.

At multiple locations throughout the now concluded Natla Technologies mining excavation, each of the mercenaries lay in wait for Lara. Each of them were defeated in turn, including the Skater Boy who was taken down in his own skate park. Lara took his uzis and continued on.

COWBOY

Along with the Bald Man and the Skater Boy, the Cowboy ambushed Lara Croft in Egypt after she had recovered the final piece of the Atlantean Scion. Lara, however, escaped, although she had lost the artifact and her weaponry to the mercenaries.

The Cowboy headed off with his fellows and Natla to a nearby yacht, where they made their departure for Atlantis, although there was a stowaway in their midst – Lara had pursued them.

At the now concluded Natla Technologies mining excavation on the island of Atlantis, each of the mercenaries lied in wait for Lara to arrive. The Cowboy was the first to meet her, although was quickly dispatched by the adventurer. Lara retrieved the Magnums from his body after the fight.

BALD MAN

Along with the Skater Boy and the Cowboy, the Bald Man ambushed Lara Croft in Egypt shortly after she had recovered the final piece of the Scion. In addition to the artefact, they also relieved her of her weaponry, the Bald Man favouring Lara’s shotgun.

Lara however escaped and dove off of a cliff into the river far below. Natla and the mercenaries headed for their yacht and set off for Atlantis. It wasn’t until they arrived there that the Bald Man observed Lara diving off of the stern and into the sea.

At the Natla Technologies mining excavation, each of the mercenaries lay in wait for Lara to arrive but every one of them was defeated, including the Bald Man who was shot down at the entrance to the Atlantean pyramid.

BAT

In Tomb Raider, they are the weakest and least dangerous enemies being able to be killed with a single pistol shot, though due to their small size, it may still sometimes take a few shots until they are hit.

BEAR

A hulking carnivoran mammal that quickly rushes to hunt down any potential prey. Common characteristics of these beasts include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears, shaggy hair, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and short tails.

In the original Tomb Raider, they are the first real living threat Lara will come across, aside from bats and wolves. The first bear is found in the very first level, Caves, down a trap chasm Lara has to jump across. If she falls to its bottom, a bear will quickly come out of the adjacent room and attack her in that enclosed space. The second bear is found in the City of Vilcabamba, inside the stables located in front of the central pool of water, and it won’t come out unless Lara ventures inside to investigate. There’s yet a third bear that roams the area around the end of level’s door.

Despite their size and build, bears are noticeably quick and can easily outrun Lara and traverse long distances in just a few seconds, potentially pinning Lara in a corner or not letting her come out from a body of water. They also can inflict moderate to heavy damage with their bites. They are not remarkably resilient, though, and even though they can sustain more punishment than the other two aforementioned enemies, it will only take a few well placed and constant shots of the pistols to take them down.

WOLF

Wolves will charge and jump at Lara, knocking her back. They will bite and scratch her and can be severely damaging. They don’t take very much firepower to take down, though; four pistol shots in Tomb Raider, and slightly more in Golden Mask. In both games, they’re always initially found sleeping and will wake up only when Lara is nearby; then they’ll either rush at her or pace around until they’re able to bite her close up.

In the original Tomb Raider, wolves follow a very basic A.I., although that doesn’t mean it’s any less effective, which is only worsened due to Lara’s limited mobility in the early games. Wolves will rush directly at Lara, and if they manage to reach her, then they’ll start making quick rounds behind her, biting her every time they come back close to her.

As with most enemies in this game, finding a high ledge will allow Lara to freely dispose of them from a vantage and safe spot. If this is not possible, then it’s recommended to shoot them from afar and try to keep retreating in order to keep the distance a bit longer.

GORILLA

Gorillas are enemies appearing in the Tomb Raider Games series. These huge apes encountered in the Tomb Raider Series. They are massive in Anniversary, towering over Lara, however in the original they were about the same height as Lara. They have dark brown fur and like most enemies in Anniversary, lack pupils.

LION

Lions are enemies in the Tomb Raider series. They are four-legged animals with brown fur. In the original Tomb Raider, both male and female lions appear. While in it´s remake only lionesses are shown.

RAT

Rats, one of the easiest enemies in the games are most commonly found on the ground or swimming in water. Simply shoot them with your Dual Pistols, and jump backwards if you’re on solid ground and they get too close. They are capable of biting Lara which causes little damage but can cause her health bar to drop significantly if they continuously bite her.

PANTHER

VELOCIRAPTOR

Velociraptors are really fast and can quickly cause a lot of damage by biting and tackling Lara. However, they often approach from afar and can be seen from a long distance, allowing the player to take the necessary precautions and/or start shooting them preemptively.

In the original Tomb Raider, they make their debut and most prominent presence in the Lost Valley level, where several of them can be found roaming the lower open valley section. Fortunately, there are a vast number of high ledges around the player can climb onto, from where they can safely shoot at these dinosaurs at will. Furthermore, even if velociraptors can charge at great speed, they frequently make long pauses to either hiss at Lara or simply to slowly pace around, allowing the player ample time to find a safe spot.

A few more are found inside the Tomb of Qualopec, where they may surprise the player by unexpectedly coming out from hallways and attacking them in close quarters. The shotgun is recommended for these close encounters.

T-REX

First appearance of the Tyrannosaurus Rex in the series. It is encountered in the lower valley section of the Lost Valley level. Its existence is hinted by the presence of other dinosaurs in the area, a broken wooden bridge seen above, but most importantly by a series of gigantic footprints on the ground. Once having approached the wooden bridge enough (about when stepping the second-to-last footprint), the T-Rex will make its dramatic entrance, charging at full speed and making the ground shake as it does so.

The tyrannosaur is extremely powerful, resilient and fast; it can traverse the entire valley –back and forth– in just a manner of seconds. It has a powerful biting attack that can instantly kill Lara, and the stompings that it does as it moves deal heavy damage, almost counting as a secondary instant kill attack. All these abilities in conjunction make the T-Rex not a recommendable enemy to fight head on, so it’s better to use brain over brawn in this encounter.

There are a number of enclosed alcoves and niches along the walls of the valley Lara can use to take cover from the beast, although just partially, and potentially putting her at risk of being cornered. A better strategy is to rush to a ground level cave that is located right below the wooden bridge, on the right wall; this will lead Lara to a vantage point where she can freely shoot at the creature without it being able to retaliate in any way.

If, on the other hand, the player wants to take the fight up and personal with the T-Rex, then they can also use the shotgun from close range to make quick work of it. Another way is to equip the pistols as soon as possible, and back flip and shoot it until it dies.

CROCODILE

In Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider III, crocodiles can only swim or walk on land depending on where they first appear. In the first game, a few instances can be found where the player is able to drain or fill up the area with water and make the crocodiles switch their moving behavior.

In the original Tomb Raider, despite if they are encountered on dry land, crocodiles are notably fast, even being able to outrun Lara. They are not too resilient, though, and just a few well placed shots with the pistols should be enough to put them down. Like most enemies, they can be safely dispatched by climbing on a high ledge and shooting them from it, whether they are on land or underwater. At least one or two crocodiles are found in almost every body of water encountered throughout the Greece and Egypt levels, and stop appearing afterward.

ATLANTIAN

The Atlanteans will run around at high speeds trying to attack Lara, either by hitting her, or possibly shooting fireballs/darts at her. The beasts have a large amount of health and are capable of causing heavy damage to Lara. When defeated, their bodies explode into many pieces that are capable of damaging Lara if they touch her.

ATLANTEAN CENTAUR

In Tomb Raider, the centaurs usually stand still and shoot their fireballs at Lara. They only move when Lara is out of range. They have a quite a lot of health. Side-flipping left and right while shooting is the best way to take them down, if they’re alone. They explode once defeated.

In Tomb Raider: Anniversary, these centaurs in the Tomb of Tihocan run at very high speeds, attempting to stomp on Lara as well as pelting her with fireballs. They have far more health than the average atlantean and are capable of quickly sapping Lara’s health away. Here, they have the ability to turn Lara into stone with their greenish colored energy when they get enraged the first time. This can be avoided by looking away from them. Though, if Lara does end up turning into stone, the player must repeatedly move the joystick left and right to break free. When they are enraged the second time, one of them will charge towards Lara. Successfully perform the adrenaline dodge and use the grappling hook to disarm the stunned centaur of his shield. Now Lara can use the shield to have the centaur turn itself into stone. Shoot the stone centaur until it’s dead and repeat the process with the other centaur. While they are first encountered as bosses in front of the Tomb of Tihocan, they later appear as regular enemies in Atlantis.

WINGED ATLANTEAN

The Winged Atlantean is a boss character that appears in the original “Tomb Raider” game released in 1996. It is a creature that guards the entrance to the final level of the game, Atlantis.

The Winged Atlantean is depicted as a humanoid creature with wings and a reptilian appearance. It has a muscular build and is covered in green scales, with long talons and sharp teeth. It is armed with a spear-like weapon, which it uses to attack Lara.

In order to defeat the Winged Atlantean, players must first navigate a maze-like series of corridors while avoiding its attacks. Once they reach the creature, they must use weapons such as pistols, shotgun, and magnums to chip away at its health bar. The fight can be challenging, as the creature is fast and agile and can deal significant damage to Lara if she is hit.

The Winged Atlantean has become an iconic boss character in the “Tomb Raider” series and has made appearances in subsequent games, such as “Tomb Raider Anniversary” and “Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.”

GIANT ATLANTEAN

This beast has an immense amount of health. Because it lacks legs, it is pretty slow in speed. If it gets close enough to Lara, It will either decide to slam her with its fists or try to grab her. It will instantly bring Lara‘s health to zero if it successfully grabs on to her. When this occurs, the mutant will slam Lara on the platform they’re on three times and then it’ll calmly drop her corpse. When it dies, it’ll explode, just like all the other Atlantean mutants.

DUBBLEGANGER

It has the red skinned, hairless appearance of all Atlantean mutants, but is noticeably female. It mimics Lara’s movements exactly, like a mirror image. It is inaggressive, and cannot be killed by conventional means, as any damage done to it (caused by Lara shooting at it), is inflicted on Lara as well. So if the Doppelganger is killed by Lara’s Firearms Lara dies as well.

There are differences between Lara and the Atlantean copy; one is that “Bacon Lara” does not have the equipment Lara does, like guns or backpack. More obviously it does not have skin, clothing or shoes.

In Tomb Raider, it seems to shoot bullets – although it has no guns. It uses the same animations as Lara does. However in Tomb Raider Anniversary, it appears to shoot fireballs, presumably generating them in a similar way to Natla.
